Imagine stepping into a world where the ground cracks beneath you, the air shimmers with heat, and the sky glows with fire—Scorched is a journey straight into the heart of chaos.
The 2025 show, Scorched, was officially revealed on April 22, marking the start of prop-building season. Up next: a planning session with the design team to align on how the props will bring the show to life. Stay tuned for updates as we dive into design and construction!
Concept
The set design for this year's props features four distinct elements:
- A Solo/Small Ensemble Staging Zone, stylized to resemble a bone yard.
- 14 backdrops forming 7 clusters of two panels each, consisting of 10x10 and 10x7.5 coroplast panels with printed imagery.
- Front sideline screens with a unique twist—alternating between each screen will be a rack of spears.
- An abundance of spears to fill those racks, adding to the dramatic effect.

Solo/Small Ensemble Staging Zone
The Solo/Small Ensemble Staging Zone is designed to evoke the atmosphere of a bone yard, serving as a dramatic focal point for solo and small ensemble performances. This area will enhance the overall theme of the show with its immersive design elements. Key features include:
- A raised platform with a weathered, rustic appearance, surrounded by skeletal structures and props resembling bones.
- The platform will be large enough to accommodate multiple performers and their instruments, creating a visually striking centerpiece.
- Dimensions: 12 feet wide, 8 feet deep, and 3 feet high.
- Access ramps: one 4-foot-wide ramps on one side for easy performer access.
- Construction: Made from durable metal tubing for stability and longevity.
- Modular design: Composed of four sections for easy transport and setup.
Backdrops
The backdrops will consist of 14 panels, each featuring custom-printed coroplast artwork that reinforces the show's visual theme. Arranged in pairs, these panels will create dynamic clusters that add depth and drama to the field.
Building on the success of the 2024 show's 10x10 clock props, these new backdrops will reuse the proven media frames from last year, now enhanced for greater durability and easier setup based on feedback and experience.
This season, the coroplast panels will be mounted to dedicated wooden frames that remain permanently attached, improving both stability and convenience during transport and assembly. Each 4-foot-wide panel will hang from the media frame using sturdy U-bolt hooks. A key improvement is ensuring the media frames match the full width of the coroplast, allowing students to grip the metal frame ends for better visibility and control while moving the props. In contrast to last year—when the coroplast overhung the frames by up to three feet, forcing students to move props from behind with limited visibility—this new design prioritizes safety, ease of handling, and faster assembly. 10mm Coroplast comes in 4x8 foot sheets, thus to optimize the use of the coroplast sheet I suggest making the width of each media frame a multiple of 4 foot.
Spears, Rack And Front Sideline Screens
The plan calls for 72 spears, each approximately 6 feet long. For reference, I had access to a sample spear from the 2017 marching show. It was constructed using a thin-walled 1-inch PVC pipe with a 12-inch wooden tip, and the shaft was wrapped in shiny vinyl. For this project, 1/4 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. PureBond Birch Plywood should provide enough material for more than 75 tips.
Six spear racks will be positioned along the front sideline, each designed to hold twelve spears spaced about 8 inches apart and angled forward for dramatic impact. These racks will alternate with sideline screens clad in 4mm coroplast, creating a bold and visually engaging pattern across the front of the field.
